Adviser to the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, Supradeep Chakma, has stated that only government forces may carry weapons in the hill regions. He urged stricter administrative action to maintain peace and curb extortion, which he said hampers local development. The remarks came during a law and order meeting in Khagrachhari attended by officials and community leaders.
Supradeep Chakma, Adviser to the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, has declared that only government security forces will be authorized to carry weapons in the hill regions. He stated that no one outside these forces will be permitted to possess arms. Chakma stressed the need for the administration to adopt stricter measures to prevent loss of life and property and to preserve peace and stability in the area.
He made the remarks on Sunday afternoon while addressing a special law and order meeting in Khagrachhari.
In his speech, the hill affairs adviser called for unity between hill residents and Bengalis to ensure lasting peace. He pointed out that extortion is obstructing the region’s development and urged authorities to take a stronger stand against such activities.
The meeting, chaired by Khagrachhari Deputy Commissioner ABM Iftekharul Islam Khandakar, was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room. It was attended by Hill District Council Chairperson Shefalika Tripura, Army Headquarters Zone Commander Lieutenant Colonel Md Khademul Islam, Superintendent of Police Arefin Jewel, indigenous leader Robi Shankar Talukdar, and Khagrachhari District BNP General Secretary M.N. Absar, along with several political and social representatives.
