Tensions Escalate as Pakistan Closes Key Border Crossings with Afghanistan

Pakistan has closed five key border crossings with Afghanistan amid escalating military clashes. The closure includes the main Torkham and Chaman routes. Both sides have reported casualties following intense overnight fighting, heightening regional tension.

Tensions along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border have reached a breaking point following intense cross-border clashes. On Sunday (October 12), Pakistan officially shut down several border crossings with Afghanistan, according to government officials quoted by Reuters.

Local authorities confirmed that Pakistan has closed its two major border points — Torkham and Chaman — along with at least three smaller crossings: Kharlachi, Angoor Adda, and Ghulam Khan.

So far, Kabul has not issued any statement regarding the border closures. The Pakistan–Afghanistan border stretches approximately 2,600 kilometers (1,600 miles), and has long been a hotspot of conflict and tension.

The latest clashes reportedly turned the frontier into a warzone on Saturday night, as heavy gunfire erupted between Pakistani troops and Taliban fighters. Afghan authorities claimed that 58 Pakistani soldiers were killed, while Pakistan’s security officials acknowledged casualties on the Afghan side but did not provide specific numbers.
